Best Things to Do in Charlotte NC
There are a bunch of fun Things to Do in Charlotte NC no matter what type of thing it is you’re looking for. Charlotte has a little bit of everything and that’s increasing everyday. We’re one of the fastest growing cities in America and with a little advice from a local videographer you’re bound to have a good time!
I was born in Charlotte, lived here my whole life, even graduated from Uncc. Point is I know this town and I’m going to list some cool places to go for all age groups. I’ll start by mentioning some main attractions but then I’ll start getting into the smaller, better stuff…. the gooey middle so to speak. Ok so off we go!
The U.S. National Whitewater Center (USNWC) is an outdoor training facility for whitewater rafting, kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking. It’s most noted claim is that it serves as an official Olympic Training Site for whitewater slalom racing…. whatever that is. But seriously one of my best friends worked there for a long time and the place is a guaranteed day of fun. It’s not just a free for all, they have all different types of activities perfect for a family or just some friends looking to have fun outside. Their website lists all the different things you can do.
The Charlotte Heart Walk is a long walk through downtown Charlotte to raise awareness and money to help fund research related to heart health. I did a video for the event this year so I was there to witness a pretty incredible event. Not only was there a phenomenal turnout but at the end, like 200 people randomly, and without orchestration, broke out…. into the electric slide, I kid you not… But definitely a worth cause.
Seems silly at first but once you see how much fun these people are having you realize it’s culture not calamity. Hunter Wilson, owner of Carolina Night Life was responsible for putting this event together, this is the 4th annual for Charlotte and it was an attempt at breaking the current world record for waldo count. You get what’s so funny about it? I knew what the joke was but the absurdity didn’t really hit me for a few days. My company was hired by Carolina Nightlife to create a promo video which could then be used to market the event in the future. The video is in the edit right now, will share soon as it’s finished.
Discovery Place, a staple of the Charlotte NC uptown, is a great place to bring your kids but you might find yourself having fun eating some liquid-nitrogen ice cream as well. Discovery Place houses some of the coolest traveling exhibits. I recently filmed a video there for a company and the exhibit was “The Birth of Coffee.” It was really interesting and of course, all you could drink coffee with all sorts of toppings. There’s plenty of science to go around but the Discovery Place in uptown Charlotte also houses a huge Imax theatre that I definitely recommend seeing a flick on sometime.
Carowinds is the place to go for roller coasters and $5 soft drinks. There’s rides for all ages and plenty of ways to entertain the whole family. There’s 13 roller coasters for the big people as well as plenty of family rides for the little ones. The biggest seasonal park theme is Scarowinds which sees the park dress for halloween and provide “scary” fun for the kids. Carowinds is where I spent my childhood summers and while it is fun, I wouldn’t suggest spending more than a summer day at the park due to the crowds and heat.
Lake Norman is about 15 miles from the Charlotte NC uptown. It’s surrounded by Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville. Lake Norman was created 50 years ago by Duke Energy and is 34 miles long with approx 500 miles of shoreline. I haven’t been there a whole lot because Lake Wylie is closer but from my experience Lake Norman is a really nice lake with lots of activities. Check out their website for updated things to do.
The Nascar Hall of Fame is a massive facilitiy in uptown Charlotte NC that’s directly owned by the city of Charlotte but also licensed by Nascar. It’s 150,000 square feet with all sorts of things to do. If you’re a Nascar fan then it needs no introduction. If you’re like me and don’t know much about it, it’s definitely a great place to start. There’s information, games, food, gear and plenty of other things to occupy your time. Lots of people come to Charlotte NC just to visit the museum.
The Fillmore is a cool music venue located in the music factory. It was constructed from an old textile mill and styled after the San Francisco music factory from which it takes it’s name. It definitely has an amazing look, and is a great place to see your favorite indie rock band.
The Golf Club at Ballantyne is a PGA golf course in the heart of ballantyne and guess what…. it’s public. Not much of a golfer but that’s good right? What I do know about the club is the PGA events held there and the incredible facilities attached. You won’t find a better public golf course anywhere in Charlotte NC. 4.5 stars by golf digest, 18 hole course, par 71.
Charlotte NC is growing at a quick and steady rate. It can no longer be considered a 2nd tier city in the US. The exciting thing is to remember what is was like 10 years ago, consider all the new people and businesses that have come and then imagine what it will be like in 10 more years. There’s plenty of things to do in Charlotte NC, with plenty more to come.
